Technical strategy and development for global issues & policy affairs Web App

From microservices to a monolithic full-stack approach

Telos radically accelerated product development velocity by using a Full-Stack Ruby on Rails pattern replacing Node microservices and a single-page app.

Our team delivered important Reporting capabilities on-time, and FiscalNote was able to scale their product development teams to work in parallel improving their product.

The Objective

Rebuild FiscalNote's web application to a higher-productivity ecosystem by transitioning from microservices to a Rails monolith, enabling a 10x increase in the addition of new data sets to the platform.

Key Features

Restore the Monolith

The company had transitioned to tens of node micro-services in a pattern that did not scale for new product enhancements. We recreated a Ruby on Rails monolith bypassing the node services to restore sustainable velocity.

Full Stack Development

We transitioned to server-side rendering to accelerate development speed, avoiding the need to separate back-end and front-end development.

Reporting and dashboards

Users have access to the latest data of their affairs, and to customizable dashboards that can be tailored to specific initiatives, departments, or regions.

Exportable CSV and PDF

Users have the ability to export reports in different formats, and to import data into spreadsheets for further analysis.

Sophisticated filtered search

Users can refine their searches using a wide range of filters specific to their needs. Search by region, issue area, date range, policy type, and more.

Save Views

Users have the ability to save views through specific filtered searches that need to be reviewed frequently.

Interactive maps with metrics

Users can visualize data like issue prevalence, policy trends, and other critical data points on a map, allowing them to identify patterns and relationships across different regions.

The Results

Telos radically accelerated FiscalNote's product development velocity by delivering critical reporting capabilities on time. The new Rails monolith enabled FiscalNote to scale their engineering teams to work in parallel on multiple product initiatives.

"Telos has several superpowers: deep bench for hard technical problems, extreme focus on Ruby on Rails, and great cost-to-value with the near-shore model."
